NRI Quota Engineering Admission in Bangalore 2027: Eligibility, Documents and Process

A clear guide for NRI families planning engineering admission in Bangalore for 2027: who qualifies for NRI quota, sponsorship, eligibility, documents, fees and the step-by-step process.

Every year we hear from parents in Dubai, Doha, Singapore, the US and the UK who want their child to study engineering in Bangalore. Their questions are almost always the same: Does my child qualify for NRI quota? Do they need to write KCET or COMEDK? How much does it cost, and when should we start? This guide answers those questions for the 2027 admission season.

What is NRI quota?

NRI quota is a small share of seats in private engineering colleges that is set aside for Non-Resident Indians, their children, or candidates sponsored by NRI relatives. In Karnataka, these seats sit within the institution’s own seat share, alongside management quota seats. Each college decides its own NRI process, fee and documents within the rules that apply to it, so details differ from one college to another.

Who can apply under NRI quota?

  • NRI students: Indian citizens who live and study abroad.
  • Children or wards of NRIs: students whose parent works abroad, even if the student studied in India.
  • NRI sponsored candidates: students sponsored by a close relative living abroad. Colleges usually ask for proof of the relationship and the sponsor’s NRI status.
  • PIO, OCI and foreign nationals: some colleges admit these candidates under NRI or a separate foreign category. Rules vary, so check with the college or contact us for updated details.

Academic eligibility

  • Pass in Class 12 or an equivalent qualification with Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry or another eligible science subject.
  • A minimum aggregate in PCM, which varies by college. Top colleges often expect higher marks for NRI seats.
  • Students from foreign boards (IB, Cambridge A Levels, American high school and others) may need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) before the university confirms admission.

Do NRI students need KCET or COMEDK?

KCET is meant for Karnataka government quota seats, and COMEDK for general private seats. NRI quota is handled separately by each college. Many private colleges admit NRI candidates mainly on qualifying exam marks, while some may also ask for an entrance score such as JEE Main or COMEDK. Requirements change, so confirm with the college before relying on one route. If your child is also eligible for regular seats, writing COMEDK keeps an extra option open. See our comparison of management quota, COMEDK and KCET.

NRI quota fees

NRI quota fees are usually quoted in US dollars and are higher than regular and management quota fees. They differ widely by college and branch, and they are revised each year. We do not publish fixed figures, because outdated numbers cause confusion. Contact us for updated details for 2027.

Documents usually required

  • Passport of the student, and of the parent or sponsor.
  • Proof of NRI status of the parent or sponsor, such as a visa or residence permit, an employment certificate, or a certificate from the Indian embassy or consulate.
  • Sponsorship affidavit and proof of relationship, if the student is NRI sponsored.
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marks cards or transcripts.
  • Transfer certificate and, for boards outside Karnataka, a migration certificate.
  • AIU equivalence certificate for foreign board qualifications, where required.
  • Passport size photographs and address proof in India and abroad.

Each college has its own list, so treat this as a starting point.
