If you want a seat in a private engineering college in Bangalore, COMEDK is the exam that matters most. Many of the city’s best known private colleges fill a large share of their seats through it, and unlike KCET, it is open to students from every state on equal terms. Yet each year families reach us in July still unsure how COMEDK ranks work or what happens in counselling.
Here is a clear, practical guide to COMEDK UGET 2027: the exam pattern, eligibility, how your rank is decided and how the counselling rounds play out.
What is COMEDK UGET?
COMEDK stands for the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka. Its Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET) is used for admission to BE/BTech seats in member private unaided engineering colleges across Karnataka, a large number of which are in Bangalore. Students from any state can apply and compete for the same seats.
COMEDK UGET exam pattern
The pattern below is based on recent years. COMEDK has not released the official 2027 notification yet, so confirm details once it is out.
| Mode | Computer based test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| Questions | 180 MCQs (60 per subject) |
| Marking | 1 mark per correct answer, 180 in total |
| Negative marking | None |
| Language | English |
With 180 questions in 180 minutes, you get roughly one minute per question. Since there is no negative marking, never leave a question blank.
Eligibility
- Passed 2nd PUC or Class 12 (or appearing in 2027) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- One more subject from Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Electronics.
- The usual minimum is 45% aggregate in these subjects, with relaxation to 40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates of Karnataka. Confirm in the 2027 brochure.
- There is no domicile restriction. Students from any state can apply.
How the COMEDK rank works
This is the biggest difference from KCET. In KCET, your board PCM marks count for half your engineering rank (see our KCET 2027 rank calculation guide). In COMEDK, your rank is based on your COMEDK test score. Board marks matter only for meeting the eligibility percentage. Ties are broken using subject-wise scores and other criteria set out in the official brochure.
So a student with average board marks but a strong entrance score can do very well in COMEDK.
COMEDK 2027 expected timeline
Official 2027 dates are not announced yet. Going by recent cycles, registration usually opens around early February and closes by March, with the exam held in May. Treat this as tentative and contact us for updated details. Our 2027 admission timeline shows how COMEDK fits with KCET and management quota.
How COMEDK counselling works
- Counselling registration after results, on the COMEDK portal.
- Document verification of marks cards, ID and category documents.
- Mock round, where you fill choices and see a trial allotment. It does not confirm a seat but shows where you stand.
- Choice filling and seat allotment rounds. List colleges and branches in order of preference. Seats are allotted by rank, choices and availability.
- Fee payment and reporting to the allotted college within the deadline.
For reference, the 2026 cycle started its mock round choice filling on 11 July and released the Round 1 allotment on 28 July, followed by further rounds through August. Reports before Round 4 showed over 17,800 engineering seats still vacant across 151 colleges. That sounds like a lot, but most of those seats were outside the high-demand branches at top colleges, which fill early.
Smart tips for COMEDK 2027
- Practise on a computer. It is a CBT, so take online mocks to get used to the screen and navigation.
- Order choices carefully. Put the college and branch you want most at the top. A careless order can lock you into a seat you did not really want.
- Use the mock round. It is the best signal of where your rank will land you.
- Write KCET and JEE Main too if you are eligible. More exams mean more options. See management quota vs COMEDK vs KCET.
- Out-of-state student? COMEDK is usually your main route. Read our guide for other state students.
If your COMEDK rank is not enough
Popular branches like CSE and AI&ML at colleges such as MSRIT and BMSIT close early. If your rank falls short, you can consider a related branch, another good college, or management quota seats. Start with our management quota guide for 2027 and how to choose the right branch.
Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in COMEDK UGET?
No, based on the recent pattern. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and wrong answers do not lose marks.
Do board marks affect the COMEDK rank?
Board marks are needed for eligibility, but the COMEDK rank is based on your COMEDK test score, unlike KCET where board marks count for 50%.
Can students from other states apply for COMEDK?
Yes. COMEDK is open to eligible students from all states, and they compete for the same seats.
When will COMEDK 2027 registration open?
Not announced yet. Recent cycles opened around early February. Contact us for updated details.
What is the COMEDK mock round?
It is a trial allotment before the real rounds. You fill choices and see a likely seat, but nothing is confirmed until the actual rounds.
