Every year we get the same call in May and June: “My KCET score was decent, so why is my rank so low?” The answer is almost always the same. Your KCET engineering rank is not based on the KCET paper alone. Your 2nd PUC or Class 12 marks count for exactly half. If you are preparing for KCET 2027 and aiming for a good engineering college in Bangalore, understanding this one rule early can change how you plan your whole year.
This guide explains the KCET 2027 exam pattern, how the engineering rank is calculated, how ties are broken, and what your options look like if the rank is not enough for the college you want.
KCET 2027 at a glance
KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admission to government quota seats in engineering and other professional courses across Karnataka, including the top colleges in Bangalore.
| Conducting body | Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) |
| Mode | Offline, pen and paper (OMR) |
| Subjects for engineering | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| Questions | 60 MCQs per subject |
| Marks | 1 mark per correct answer, 60 per paper |
| Duration | 80 minutes per paper |
| Negative marking | None |
| Medium | English or Kannada |
| Official website | cetonline.karnataka.gov.in |
Some categories of candidates also need to take a Kannada language test. KEA notifies who needs it in the official information bulletin each year, so read that section carefully when the 2027 bulletin is released.
KCET 2027 expected dates
KEA has not announced the KCET 2027 schedule yet. Based on recent years, online registration usually opens around January and the exam is held around April, with results following in May or June. Treat these as tentative only. Keep checking cetonline.karnataka.gov.in, or contact us for updated details once the bulletin is out. Our engineering admission timeline for 2027 also maps out how KCET, COMEDK and management quota windows overlap.
Eligibility in short
- Passed 2nd PUC or Class 12 (or appearing) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- One more subject from Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Electronics or Computer Science.
- The usual norm is a minimum of 45% aggregate in these subjects for general merit, and 40% for reserved categories.
- Karnataka eligibility (for government quota seats) depends on study and residence clauses defined by KEA each year.
How the KCET engineering rank is calculated
This is the part most students miss. For engineering, KEA gives equal weightage (50:50) to two things:
- Your KCET marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (out of 180).
- Your qualifying exam marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from 2nd PUC or Class 12. Only theory marks are considered, and they are normalised across boards so that students from CBSE, ICSE, state boards and others are compared fairly.
Both are converted to a common scale and added with equal weight. That combined score decides your rank. If you appeared for 2nd PUC more than once, the best attempt is used.
A simple worked example
The exact normalisation formula is applied by KEA, so the numbers below are only to show the idea, not to predict a real rank.
| Student | KCET PCM (out of 180) | Board PCM theory (as %) | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student A | 140 (about 78%) | 70% | Strong KCET is pulled down by board marks |
| Student B | 120 (about 67%) | 92% | Board marks lift the combined score |
Roughly, Student A ends up near 74% combined and Student B near 79%, so Student B can get a better rank despite scoring 20 marks less in KCET. This is why we always tell families: do not ignore board theory marks while preparing for the entrance test.
Tie-breaking rules
When two candidates have the same combined score, KEA breaks the tie in this order:
- Higher marks in Mathematics.
- Then higher marks in Physics, then Chemistry.
- If still tied, the older candidate gets the better rank.
Smart preparation tips based on the pattern
- Attempt every question. There is no negative marking, so a blank answer is a guaranteed zero.
- Practise speed. 60 questions in 80 minutes leaves about 80 seconds per question. Timed mock tests matter more than extra theory.
- Follow the Karnataka PUC syllabus closely. KCET questions track the state syllabus, and the same preparation helps your board score.
- Protect your board theory marks. They are half your rank. A few extra marks in board Maths can move you thousands of ranks.
- Keep COMEDK and JEE Main as backups. Many Bangalore colleges also admit through COMEDK. See our management quota vs COMEDK vs KCET comparison.
What if your KCET rank is not enough?
Top Bangalore colleges such as RVCE, BMSCE, MSRIT and BMSIT close their popular branches early in KCET counselling. If your rank does not reach there, you still have real options:
- Try COMEDK counselling, which has a separate seat pool.
- Consider a different branch at the same college, or the same branch at a slightly lower ranked college. Our guide on choosing the right engineering branch can help.
- Look at management quota seats, which are admitted on merit and availability rather than on rank alone. Read engineering admission with a low KCET rank and our management quota guide for 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in KCET 2027?
Based on the current pattern, no. Each correct answer gets 1 mark and wrong answers do not lose marks. Confirm in the official 2027 bulletin when it is released.
How much do 2nd PUC marks matter for the KCET engineering rank?
They count for 50%. Your normalised PCM theory marks from the qualifying exam are combined with your KCET PCM marks in equal weight.
Can CBSE students take KCET?
Yes. Students from CBSE, ICSE and other boards can apply. Their board marks are normalised for rank calculation. Eligibility for government quota seats depends on the Karnataka study and residence clauses notified by KEA.
When will KCET 2027 registration start?
Dates are not announced yet. Going by recent years it is likely around January 2027, but this is tentative. Contact us for updated details.
Is admission possible in Bangalore without a good KCET rank?
Yes, through COMEDK or management quota seats. Seat availability and fees change every year, so talk to a counsellor early.
