Bangalore draws engineering students from every corner of India. Families from Bihar, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, the North East and beyond send their children here for the colleges, the tech industry and the internships that come with living in India’s startup capital. If you are one of them, the admission rules work a little differently for you than for a student from Karnataka. This guide explains exactly how.
The short answer
For most students from outside Karnataka, there are three practical routes into a Bangalore engineering college:
- COMEDK UGET, the all-India exam for member private colleges in Karnataka.
- Management quota, where the college admits students directly.
- Private universities that run their own admission process or accept national scores.
KCET, the state exam, is mainly for students who qualify as Karnataka candidates. More on that below.
Why KCET usually is not the route for you
KCET fills government quota seats, and those seats are reserved for candidates who meet the Karnataka eligibility clauses set by the Karnataka Examinations Authority. These clauses are mostly based on where the student has studied, for example having studied in Karnataka for a set number of years. A student who has studied entirely in another state generally does not qualify for these seats, even if they can register for the exam.
If your family has lived or studied in Karnataka for part of your schooling, read the eligibility clauses in the official KCET brochure on the KEA website carefully. You may qualify under one of them.
Route 1: COMEDK UGET
COMEDK UGET is the main exam for students from outside Karnataka. It is open to candidates from across India and fills a fixed share of seats in member private engineering colleges, many of them in Bangalore, through rank-based online counselling. Fees for COMEDK seats are higher than KCET seats but are capped under the state agreement, so they are usually much lower than management quota fees.
In recent years the exam has been a three-hour computer-based test with multiple-choice questions in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. COMEDK has not yet announced the 2027 dates or the official pattern, so follow comedk.org for the notification. If you are serious about Bangalore, COMEDK should be on your exam list.
Route 2: Management quota
Management quota seats are open to eligible students from any state. The college decides admission, so where you studied and your rank matter far less. This is the most direct way to target a specific college and branch, such as CSE or AI and ML at a top college. The trade-off is cost, since management fees are the highest of the three routes, and limited seats at popular colleges go early.
Colleges that students from other states often ask us about include RVCE, BMSCE, MSRIT, BMSIT&M and DSCE. Our management quota guide for 2027 explains the process in detail.
Route 3: Private universities
Bangalore’s private universities admit students from all states through their own tests, national exam scores or a combination. Options include Dayananda Sagar University, RV University and Alliance University. Accepted exams, dates and fees vary by university and by year, so contact us for updated details.

Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and pass certificates
- Transfer certificate from your school
- Migration certificate, which colleges often ask for when you move from a non-Karnataka board
- Entrance exam admit card and scorecard
- Aadhaar or other government photo ID
- Passport-size photographs
- Category certificate, if applicable
Each college has its own final list, so treat this as a starting point.
Practical tips for families moving to Bangalore
- Plan hostel early. College hostels have limited rooms, and first-year students are usually given priority only if they apply on time. Private PGs near campus are the common backup.
- Think about commute. Bangalore is large and traffic is real. A college across the city from your accommodation can mean long daily travel.
- Budget for the full four years. Add tuition, hostel or PG rent, food, transport and exam fees.
- Avoid paying unknown middlemen. Pay fees only to the college’s official account and always collect a receipt.
Frequently asked questions
